George R.R. Martin, well-known as the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, spoke at the Edinburgh International Book Festival yesterday about The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien and fantasy literature. GRRM is well-known as a “friendly critic” of Tolkien. Although he has criticised some plot elements in the past, Martin has always spoken of the George RR Martin Books and Stories. George R.R. Martin was born September 20, 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey. He began writing young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, and in high school began to write fiction for comic fanzines (amateur fan magazines). Martin's first professional sale was made in 1970 at age 21. By this point, there are a few different versions of the A Song of Ice and Fire story floating around. There are the books by George R.R. Martin, which are still in the process of being written "Based on George R.R. Martin's "Fire & Blood", the series, which is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen at the height of its power." This seems to have just been adapted from the actual subtitle on Fire & Blood, which reads "300 Years Before A Game of Thrones, Dragons Ruled Westeros". The immense success of both of HBO's fantasy epic series Game of Thrones and especially the subsequent spin-off House of the Dragon has helped the popularity of George R.R. Martin's universe take George R. R. Martin says that he hopes that Game of Thrones eventually expands into a vast, Marvel-style universe. The author began publishing his fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire with the original novel Game of Thrones in 1991.
