There was apparently a number of Ducato produced with dodgy connections to the starter motor where the positive was only resting, a current applied had the effect of a bimetallic spring but a reduced voltage meant that the starter didnt turn. Just worth checking this as well. hope this helps Phil
21. Feb 27, 2012. #1. My 2002 Ducato 1.9TD camper has an occasional problem with stalling shortly after starting for the first time in the day. Last year during a weeks holiday it happened on two successive days then was fine for the rest of the week. Each time it happened the van just lost power and as soon as I declutched the engine stopped.

It's reasonable then to assume that the problem is in the electrical system and (as Fiat Ducato advises above) the prime suspect would be the relay that triggers step-retraction. But Marquis have had four goes at sorting this problem out, and as one might expect checking/replacing the relay to be the first approach to take, the fault may be
absolutely not anywhere near man enough. you are relying on a cigar lighter socket circuit capable of handling just 10amps. a bad earth strap on the engine or loose terminal on the battery will cause this problem. better to fix the problem before it leaves you stranded. very simple for even a basic diy mechanic.
Communicator. As suggested above for the starting problem, check the condition of battery positive, and earth connections first. As suggested by earlier posts. poor contact in the ignition switch could also be the cause of cranking problems. With the failure of the engine to stop, there are two possible causes.
If I input my Ducato’s VIN into the Chassis Check feature, the Fiat Camper system responds as one might anticipate it should. But if I input the VIN with, say 02729502 or 02904389 as the last 8 figures, or with a number that is one lower or one higher than mine, the system rejects it as being incorrect.
Disconnect the starter motor solenoid relay switch wiring. Remove the protective cover. Disconnect the push-on electrical connector. Remove the nuts. Remove the cable. Remove the starter motor solenoid relay switch. Remove the engine sensor/generator wires. Remove the bolts and ground wire.
